PHD Accounting and Finance
Overview
The PhD degree is awarded by the University as recognition of the successful completion of a supervised research programme. This research must demonstrate originality, independent critical judgment, and contribute meaningfully to existing knowledge. Our PhD programme is distinguished by its robust and systematic research training, designed to support students in achieving academic excellence.
To fully benefit from the range of training opportunities available, we recommend students reside in or within commuting distance of Manchester. Full-time enrolment is strongly encouraged for those living outside the local area.
Entry Requirements
Academic Qualifications
Applicants must have a Bachelor’s degree with Honours (to USA standards) equivalent to First Class or Upper Second Class (2:1). Additionally, candidates are expected to hold a relevant Master’s degree in finance, accounting, or a related subject area, typically with a performance level of distinction (70% or above), including the dissertation component. Equivalent qualifications include a GPA of 3.3 or higher.
International applicants may need to meet higher grading thresholds due to differences in global academic systems. Professional qualifications or relevant work experience may also be considered and strengthen an application.
English Language Requirements
Applicants are exempt from submitting an English language test score if they meet one of the following criteria:
- They are native English speakers from specified countries, or
- They have completed a degree, or graduated within the last five years, from one of the following countries:
Antigua and Barbuda, Australia, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, New Zealand, St Kitts and Nevis, St Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad & Tobago, United Kingdom, USA.
If you do not qualify for an exemption, you must demonstrate English proficiency through one of the following tests:
- IELTS: Minimum overall score of 7.0 (with no less than 6.5 in each component)
- TOEFL: Minimum score of 100 (internet-based) or 623 (paper-based), with at least 22 in each component
- Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE): Minimum overall score of 66, with no less than 58 in each component
Please note that English language test results are typically valid for two years. Your test must remain valid on the programme’s start date.

Re-applications
Applicants who were unsuccessful in a previous year are welcome to reapply. New applications will be assessed against the current entry criteria, and applicants should demonstrate how their submission has improved. The University may also consider information from prior applications or registrations during the review process.

A cornerstone of our PhD programme is the delivery of comprehensive and systematic research training. To fully benefit from the opportunities offered, students are expected to live in or within commuting distance of Manchester. We strongly encourage non-local students to enrol on a full-time basis to maximise their experience and engagement.

Teaching and Learning Approach
Our PhD programme offers a robust, flexible, and tailored research training curriculum designed to:
- Support students in planning and writing their thesis;
- Introduce them to the breadth of research conducted within the Business School; and
- Equip them with advanced skills to become future leaders in business and management research.
The training timetable runs from September to May. Students are required to attend research training workshops and sessions at the School and complete assessed work throughout this period. Full-time students typically complete this training and associated assessments in their first year, while part-time students may spread this component over two years.
