PHD Business and Management
Overview
The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree is awarded by the University in recognition of the successful completion of rigorous, supervised research. This research must demonstrate originality, independent critical analysis, and contribute meaningfully to the advancement of knowledge.
A cornerstone of our PhD programme is the provision of robust and systematic research training. To fully benefit from the opportunities we offer, students are expected to reside in or within commuting distance of Northampton. While part-time enrolment is possible, we strongly encourage students residing outside the local area to apply for full-time study to maximize their engagement with the programme.
Key Features:
Our PhD programme at AMBS welcomes new students annually each September. To be considered, complete applications must be submitted by June 30. For those seeking funding opportunities, earlier deadlines apply—please refer to the Entry Requirements for details.
Research Training:
Our research training programme is designed to provide a flexible yet comprehensive foundation for our students. It has three primary objectives:
- To address students’ immediate needs as they develop and write their thesis;
- To introduce the breadth of research conducted across the Business School; and
- To equip students with the skills necessary to excel as the next generation of business and management science researchers.
The training runs from September through May and includes workshops, research sessions, and assessed assignments. Full-time students typically complete this training and associated assessments within their first year, while part-time students may extend this process over two years.
With a focus on fostering excellence, our programme ensures that students are well-prepared to make a significant impact in the field of business and management research.
Coursework:
As part of their research training program, students are evaluated through a variety of courses. Additionally, their progress is systematically monitored at different stages of their studies through an annual progress review process.
PhD students will participate in a comprehensive Research Training Programme, which includes mandatory on-campus classes and the completion of various assessed assignments.
In the second year, students can select elective workshops from the Research Training Programme that align with their stage of study and help enhance their existing expertise.
During the third year, students have the opportunity to choose additional elective workshops from the Research Training Programme to further support their academic progress and refine their knowledge.
