Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

The University of Northampton also recognizes the value of prior learning and offers a Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) scheme. This means that if you have previous education or work experience relevant to your chosen course, you may be able to get credit towards your degree. This not only saves you time and money, but also allows you to focus on new areas of study and deepen your understanding in specific subjects.

RPL is a great opportunity for students who have taken a break from education or those looking to change careers. It acknowledges the skills and knowledge gained outside of traditional academic settings, making higher education more accessible and inclusive.

The RPL process involves assessing your previous learning experiences against the learning outcomes of your desired course. This can include work experience, volunteering, self-directed learning, or other forms of informal education. The university also offers guidance and support to help you prepare for the assessment and make a strong case for your previous learning.

Benefits of Recognition of Prior Learning

Saves Time and Money:

The RPL scheme can significantly reduce the time and cost required to complete a degree. By recognizing your prior learning, you may be able to skip certain courses or modules, allowing you to finish your degree earlier and save on tuition fees.

Personalized Learning Experience:

With RPL, you have the opportunity to customize your learning journey by focusing on new areas of study that interest you or that align with your career goals. This can help you develop a unique set of skills and knowledge that employers value.

Enhances Employability:

Employers often look for candidates who have a diverse range of skills and experiences. RPL allows you to showcase your transferable skills and practical knowledge, making you stand out in the job market.

Steps to Submit Your Application?

To benefit from the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) at Northampton University, please follow these steps:

  1. Reach out to the RPL coordinator, usually the head of your selected course, who is available for consultation on each course page. They can guide you through the following subjects: formulating your RPL claim by aligning your prior learning with the demands of the course; understanding the University’s procedure on structuring your RPL claim, restrictions on RPL credits, and how to file an RPL application; and comprehending the process of how your claim is evaluated, and the type of proof you might need to provide.
  2. Fill out the application form in due time. As you do, remember to:
  • Align your past learning or experience to the specifications of the chosen course.
  • Assemble supporting proof that distinctly outlines your accomplishments and ascertains that they are your own.

Your RPL coordinator will then progress your RPL application. Please ensure that the coordinator is informed about any alterations to your contact information while your application is under evaluation.

Looking to Enter at a Later Stage?

For those applicants wishing to apply via NOU for direct entry into the second or third year of study, a separate RPL application isn’t required. Simply indicate your desired year of entry in the ‘point of entry’ section of the NOU form, and our admissions team will assess your eligibility.

Before submitting your NOU application, we strongly recommend contacting the RPL coordinator to verify that the course allows direct entry. Evidence like an academic transcript and syllabus should be provided to back up your claim for direct entry at a later stage. An admissions tutor will let you know what’s required.

If you’re seeking exemption from specific modules or you’re not applying via NOU, you should file for RPL using the process outlined above.
